BC Racing ER Series True Rear Coilovers – BMW E36 M3
The BC Racing ER Series True Rear Coilovers for the BMW E36 M3 are an advanced, track-focused suspension upgrade designed for drivers looking for independent damping control, external reservoirs and a true rear coilover conversion.
Unlike the standard E36 rear suspension layout, where the spring and damper are mounted separately, the True Rear configuration relocates the rear spring onto the damper to create a complete rear coilover assembly.
Combined with independent compression and rebound adjustment, the ER Series True Rear kit provides a highly adjustable suspension platform for serious fast-road, track and competition-focused E36 M3 builds.
Why choose BC Racing ER Series True Rear for your E36 M3?
The BMW E36 M3 remains one of the most popular BMW platforms for track and motorsport builds, and the ER Series is designed for drivers who want considerably more suspension control than a conventional single-adjustable coilover.
Compression and rebound damping can be adjusted independently, allowing more precise changes to how the E36 responds during braking, acceleration, cornering and changes in surface.
The external reservoirs increase damper oil capacity and help manage heat during sustained hard driving, while the True Rear configuration replaces the factory-style divorced rear suspension layout with a complete rear coilover assembly.

True Rear Coilover Conversion
The main difference between this kit and the standard BC Racing E36 M3 ER Series setup is the rear suspension layout.
The factory E36 uses a divorced rear arrangement, with the rear spring and damper mounted separately.
With the True Rear configuration, the rear spring is mounted concentrically around the damper, creating a complete rear coilover assembly.
This provides a more conventional motorsport-style suspension layout and can make spring changes and setup development more straightforward on dedicated track cars.
Independent Compression & Rebound Adjustment
The defining feature of the ER Series is its independent 2-way damping adjustment.
Rather than using a single adjuster to alter the overall damper response, compression and rebound can be tuned separately.
Compression adjustment influences how the suspension behaves as the damper compresses, while rebound adjustment controls how the suspension extends again afterwards.
This provides substantially greater setup flexibility for experienced drivers and suspension specialists looking to fine-tune an E36 M3 around specific tyres, spring rates and circuit conditions.
External Reservoirs
The ER Series uses external reservoirs to increase damper oil capacity and improve heat management.
During prolonged track driving, repeated suspension movement generates significant heat within the dampers. Increased oil capacity helps manage these temperatures and maintain more consistent damping characteristics throughout a session.
This makes the ER Series particularly well suited to E36 M3s that regularly see demanding circuit use.
BMW E36 M3 Track Suspension
The ER Series True Rear provides a highly adjustable platform for developing the handling of the E36 M3.
Separate compression and rebound control allows the suspension to be configured around performance tyres, spring rates, alignment and other chassis modifications.
The kit can complement upgrades such as adjustable suspension arms, uprated anti-roll bars, polyurethane or solid bushes and more aggressive geometry settings.
After installation, we recommend having the vehicle professionally aligned. Track-focused cars can also benefit from corner weighting and a geometry setup developed around their intended use.
Choosing Your Spring Rate
Spring-rate selection is especially important with a True Rear E36 M3 setup.
Because the rear spring acts at a different point in the suspension compared with the factory divorced arrangement, the spring rates used with a standard E36 rear layout should not be directly transferred to a True Rear setup.
The appropriate spring rate should instead be selected specifically for the True Rear configuration, taking into account vehicle weight, tyre choice, alignment, anti-roll bars and intended use.
If you're unsure which spring-rate configuration is appropriate for your E36 M3, contact us before ordering and we can help you choose a suitable setup.
Important True Rear Considerations
A True Rear coilover configuration transfers spring load through the rear damper mounting location rather than the original spring location.
Because this changes how suspension loads are transferred into the chassis, the condition and suitability of the relevant rear mounting points should be considered before installation.
For track and competition builds in particular, professional installation and regular inspection of the rear mounting points and suspension hardware are recommended.
Maintenance & Servicing
The ER Series is a rebuildable, high-performance suspension system designed for demanding applications.
The dampers, external reservoirs, hoses, adjustment mechanisms and mounting hardware should be kept clean and inspected regularly.
Cars seeing frequent track or competition use should be serviced appropriately to maintain consistent damping performance and maximise the service life of the suspension.
E36 M3 Compatibility
This BC Racing ER Series True Rear kit is designed for the BMW E36 M3 application.
As E36 models can vary depending on year, market and existing suspension configuration, please confirm your exact vehicle specification before ordering.
If you're unsure whether this is the correct True Rear application for your car, contact us and we'll help you identify the appropriate setup.
What's Included?
The BC Racing ER Series True Rear kit is supplied as a complete coilover suspension package for the applicable BMW E36 M3, including the front coilovers, True Rear coilover assemblies, springs, external reservoirs and relevant adjustable components.
Exact top-mount, spring-rate and reservoir specifications can vary depending on the selected configuration, so please check your chosen setup before ordering.
