BC Racing ZR Series Coilovers – BMW E36 M3
The BC Racing ZR Series Coilovers for the BMW E36 M3 are a flagship, track-focused suspension system designed for drivers looking for maximum adjustability and detailed control over chassis behaviour.
The ZR Series uses 3-way damping adjustment with separate low-speed compression, high-speed compression and rebound controls. It also features external reservoirs, height adjustment independent of spring compression and an inverted monotube design where applicable. Swift Springs are supplied as standard on the ZR Series.

BMW E36 M3 Track Suspension
The ZR Series provides the level of adjustability required to develop an E36 M3 around specific tyres, spring rates, alignment settings and circuit conditions.
Low-speed compression adjustment can be used to influence slower chassis movements such as roll, pitch, braking dive and weight transfer.
High-speed compression adjustment controls how the suspension responds to faster damper movements caused by bumps, kerbs and sharp surface changes.
Rebound can then be adjusted separately to control how quickly the suspension extends after being compressed.
Being able to tune these characteristics independently gives experienced drivers and suspension specialists significantly more scope to refine the balance of the car.
3-Way Damping Adjustment
The defining feature of the ZR Series is its 3-way damping adjustment.
The ZR provides:
- 15 clicks of low-speed compression
- 12 clicks of high-speed compression
- 30 clicks of rebound adjustment
Separating these adjustments means changes can be made to one area of the suspension response without necessarily making the same change elsewhere.
This can be especially useful when developing an E36 M3 for different circuits, tyres or weather conditions.
Inverted Monotube Dampers
On McPherson strut applications, the ZR Series uses an inverted monotube damper where the vehicle application allows it.
The inverted design increases structural rigidity while moving more of the damper mass towards the chassis. External reservoirs are connected to the dampers through braided lines, allowing them to be remotely mounted for easier adjustment.
Not every application permits inverted dampers front and rear, so the exact configuration can vary with the vehicle.
External Reservoirs
The ZR Series uses external reservoirs as part of its advanced damper design.
These increase the available oil volume and provide the separate compression adjustment hardware required for the 3-way system.
On inverted applications, braided lines allow the reservoirs to be mounted remotely on the chassis, making the adjustment controls easier to access and helping package the system around the vehicle.
Swift Springs as Standard
Unlike many of BC Racing's other coilover ranges, Swift Springs are supplied as standard with the ZR Series.
Swift Springs are designed for motorsport applications where consistent spring behaviour and reduced weight are priorities, complementing the track-focused nature of the ZR damper system.
Custom spring rates and matching damper valving are also available for more specialised builds.
